A woman's upper torsoThe team at Millennium Medical knows that undergoing surgery is a major decision, and that healing can take a lot out of you and your loved ones. This is why we always go over pre-operative and post-operative instructions in great detail when patients come to our Chevy Chase practice. Whether you undergo liposuction to get rid of unwanted and unsightly body fat or a full body contouring process to revise your entire figure, we're here for you.

As patients heal from body sculpting surgeries, they may be looking for ways to ease discomfort and distress. One option to consider is a compression garment. Let's go over the issue of compression garments in some detail right now.

What is a compression garment?

A compression garment is a form-fitting undergarment that is worn after a patient has undergone a body contouring surgery such as tummy tuck (abdominoplasty). This compression garment is meant to provide support to the patient as they heal and improve the overall recovery experience in the process.

Are compression garments comfortable?

Yes.

Compression garments fit snugly around the patient's frame but are made of breathable materials. This allows patients to wear the garments without them feeling too constricting. When selecting a compression garment, the fit will be important to consider, as patients will want snugness but not garments that are too tight.

If you need assistance picking a compression garment, we will be more than happy to help you with these matters.

What are the benefits of wearing a compression garment?

There are two primary benefits to wearing a compression garment.

  • Reduced Swelling - Many patients who wear compression garments report that they experience less pronounced swelling as they heal
  • A Sense of Comfort - Most patients who wear compression garments note a sense of psychological comfort from wearing a compression garment

These two benefits should not be taken for granted, though it should be noted that these are anecdotal benefits rather than scientifically proven ones. Research is ongoing as to the actual effectiveness of wearing compression garments.

Are there any downsides to not wearing compression garments?

There are no known downsides to not wearing compression garments. With that in mind, however, patients should note that wearing a compression garment may be recommended for their needs, particularly for major body sculpting surgeries.

How long will my compression garment be worn after surgery?

This can vary based on the nature of the surgery that you undergo. Usually a compression garment is worn for about two weeks, at which time a second compression garment may be suggested for the next two weeks.

During your consultation, we will be able to go over all of these matters in greater detail as well as other things that you can do to improve your overall healing experience. Your comfort and well being is of our utmost concern and we will do whatever we can to make your healing experience as tolerable and quick as possible.
